Johannesburg
Born as a mining camp in 1886 when the unbelievable rich gold deposits of the Witwatersrand were first discovered, Johannesburg has grown to a sophisticated city of two million. It is the largest city in South Africa and the third largest on the African continent.
It stands over 5,000 feet above sea level and is the country's financial and commercial centre. Johannesburg is the main gateway to the major tourist regions of Southern Africa.
