Located in Plaza de Chueca, this small tavern has been serving great food and drinks at reasonable prices since the early 1900s. It still has the original brass counter on the bar and beer taps from that period. You get the impression that hundreds of thousands of people have passed through. It has that lived-in feeling. The beer and vermouth are good and cheap and you can choose from a range of tapas, raciones (larger portions) and sandwiches to eat in the cosy dining room behind the bar - all at good prices (tapas from 250 ptas/EUR 1.50). It's decorated with huge wine barrels, lots of aged wood, amusing old posters and an outstanding fresco on the ceiling. However, it does get rather hot and stuffy in summer.
